NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“I gulped it right down。 Excellent, as always。 。 。 。 Cornwell brings battles to life like no one else。” –George R。R。 Martin, Author of Game of Thrones

The final installment in Bernard Cornwell’s bestselling Saxon Tales series, chronicling the epic story of the making of England—the basis for The Last Kingdom, the hit Netflix series。

THE FINAL BATTLE AWAITS…

The epic conclusion to the globally bestselling historical series。

England is under attack。 Chaos reigns。 Northumbria, the last kingdom, is threatened by armies from all sides, by land and sea – and only one man stands in their way。 Torn between loyalty and sworn oaths, the warrior king Lord Uhtred of Bebbanburg faces his greatest ever battle – and prepares for his ultimate fate…

“Perhaps the greatest writer of historical adventure novels today” (Washington Post), Bernard Cornwell has dazzled and entertained readers and critics with his prolific string of page-turning bestsellers。 Of all his protagonists, however, none is as beloved as Uhtred of Bebbanburg, and this thrilling historical novel continues the saga of his adventures and the turbulent early years of England。

The story of the creation of England (Engaland) is coming to an end in this finale to the Saxon Series by Bernard Cornwell。 Uther once again finds himself in the middle of the battles of the British Isles including the Irish, Scottish & English (the Welsh being quiet in this book)。 King AEthelstan (Grandson of King Alfred the Great) is seeking to banish the Scots from England (Northumberland & Cumbria) and create a single country。 Ending in a final battle - as one would expect from Cornwell - th The story of the creation of England (Engaland) is coming to an end in this finale to the Saxon Series by Bernard Cornwell。 Uther once again finds himself in the middle of the battles of the British Isles including the Irish, Scottish & English (the Welsh being quiet in this book)。 King AEthelstan (Grandson of King Alfred the Great) is seeking to banish the Scots from England (Northumberland & Cumbria) and create a single country。 Ending in a final battle - as one would expect from Cornwell - this tells a fictional account of the build up to the Battle of Brunanburh - the battle that sealed England as a country。 This has everything that you would expect from Cornwell - graphic descriptions of battles, shieldwalls and fighting。 As well as the politics behind Uther's castle as he finds himself at the centre of a tumultuous age。 Great fun, and a good ending to the series。 。。。more

Why must this series end?! The entire time I was reading this, there was a horrible little bit of awareness that once I finished, that was it。 I enjoyed it so much, but hated the site of the pages dwindling。 I don't know how to feel。 I loved the book, but I'm so depressed。 I guess I have to read the series again。 Why must this series end?! So sorry that this series is now over。 I loved the Sharpe books, but this is probably my favorite Cornwell series。 Great story, great ending, hope he pens a couple of prequels。

Very good and enjoyed it immensely, but thought it was a little short compared to his earlier novels in this series。 Got the feeling he was tired of writing this saga and did the bare minimum to finish it。 There was mot as much detail and intrigue as with the earlier novels。 Still I am sorry to see the series end。

Dávám pět hvězd, nemůžu jinak, i když Válečník, objektivně vzato, není nejlepší kniha z téhle série a asi by jí slušelo něco mezi třemi a čtyřmi hvězdami。 Ale je to poslední díl, takže těch pět hvězd je takový bonus za celou tuhle ságu。Díky Uhtrede, za ty desítky a desítky hodin, co jsme spolu strávili。 U téhle ságy se člověk nenudil a klidně bych ještě pár dílů snesl。 Ale nikdo nemůže řádit na bojišti věčně, co naděláme。。。

So sad to reach the end of this series。 I could easily read 13 more。

An ending to the saga。And not a bad one。 Not, I think, one of the best Uhtred books - I'd say that Sword Song, Death of Kings and Lords。of the North are all better - but a reasonable to ending to a great tale。 Good to see that Uhtred ended his days happy。 The idiot wife, who he complained of in Sword Song, is introduced, but I'm glad to see Uhtred still had Benedetta to love and live with。 The story is somewhat weak。 Aethelstan wants to fight a battle in the north, and does。so。 Will Uhtred lose An ending to the saga。And not a bad one。 Not, I think, one of the best Uhtred books - I'd say that Sword Song, Death of Kings and Lords。of the North are all better - but a reasonable to ending to a great tale。 Good to see that Uhtred ended his days happy。 The idiot wife, who he complained of in Sword Song, is introduced, but I'm glad to see Uhtred still had Benedetta to love and live with。 The story is somewhat weak。 Aethelstan wants to fight a battle in the north, and does。so。 Will Uhtred lose Bebbanburg, or move south, or be betrayed by Aethelstan? As we know that Bernard Cornwell is as faithful to history as he can be, the outcome of this story is known before it starts。 Moreover, we know that Uhtred will succeed, partly by guile and partly by his warrior skills, and that there will be dramatic battles, especially at the end。 All that remains unknown, is how our hero (and everyone else) gets to the battle of Brunanburh, and which of the fictional characters die during the action。So it is a testament to Cornwell's story-telling skills that As we know that Bernard Cornwell is as faithful to history as he can be, the outcome of this story is known before it starts。 Moreover, we know that Uhtred will succeed, partly by guile and partly by his warrior skills, and that there will be dramatic battles, especially at the end。 All that remains unknown, is how our hero (and everyone else) gets to the battle of Brunanburh, and which of the fictional characters die during the action。So it is a testament to Cornwell's story-telling skills that this book is one of the best of the series; it is an absorbing read throughout, and the final scenes are genuinely gripping。 。。。more

The novel completes the unification of England and Uhtred's (increasingly unlikely) place in history。 I started the first novel in spring of 2020 and now in fall of 2021, I find I'll miss the comfort of Uhtred's bloody exploits as a distraction from COVID。 The novel completes the unification of England and Uhtred's (increasingly unlikely) place in history。 I started the first novel in spring of 2020 and now in fall of 2021, I find I'll miss the comfort of Uhtred's bloody exploits as a distraction from COVID。 。。。more

Bernard Cornwell is the most accomplished writer of the fear, bravery and savagery involved in pre medieval war, and he is a master。 This is the final novel of the Uhtred of Bebbanburg series and it's incredible。 Uhtred is getting old but has not given up to the relaxation of the elderly。 He still worships Thor and the other Norse gods and dwells in his keep on the border between the Anglish christians to the south and the Scots and Norsemen to the north。 King AEthelstan of Englaland is ventur Bernard Cornwell is the most accomplished writer of the fear, bravery and savagery involved in pre medieval war, and he is a master。 This is the final novel of the Uhtred of Bebbanburg series and it's incredible。 Uhtred is getting old but has not given up to the relaxation of the elderly。 He still worships Thor and the other Norse gods and dwells in his keep on the border between the Anglish christians to the south and the Scots and Norsemen to the north。 King AEthelstan of Englaland is venturing north to unite his realm and Uhtred will be caught in the middle and choose which side to fight on。 I have greatly enjoyed this series along with every other book of Cornwell's that I have read 。。。more

Was looking forward greatly to this book having read all the rest of the series。It was ok。Maybe I expected too much but it seemed a bit like Cornwell was going through the motions with this one。 Enjoyed the historical background as always but the story seemed to follow a very familiar pattern。 Although Uhtred is obviously an old man in this book it didn't deviate from the familiar formula。 In what I assume is the finale I hoped for a bit more。Still a good read and if you are a fan you will enjoy Was looking forward greatly to this book having read all the rest of the series。It was ok。Maybe I expected too much but it seemed a bit like Cornwell was going through the motions with this one。 Enjoyed the historical background as always but the story seemed to follow a very familiar pattern。 Although Uhtred is obviously an old man in this book it didn't deviate from the familiar formula。 In what I assume is the finale I hoped for a bit more。Still a good read and if you are a fan you will enjoy it, but not the best in the series 。。。more
